Why a 10 mm stockpile stops being 10 mm
Size control on a stone crusher: screen cloth, return of oversize, loader practice and why mixed piles fail a buyer.
The pile has a name. The stone has to earn it.
A stockpile is 10 mm only while the stone in it is 10 mm. The name on a board does not survive a torn screen, a choked deck, or a loader that takes a bite from two piles because they were allowed to touch.
This is the ordinary way crushed stone goes wrong. Not a dramatic breakdown. A slow mix.
Where the size is actually decided
At the screen. The cloth opening, the deck angle, the feed rate and whether the deck is blinded by dust or moisture decide what falls through. A jaw that is crushing well can still feed a screen that is not separating.
On the return. Oversize that does not go back to the crusher has to go somewhere. If it goes into the product pile, the product is no longer that product.
In the yard. Piles need room between them. A shared toe is a mixed product. Loading at night, or loading with a bucket that is too wide for the gap, finishes the damage the screen started.
At the truck. A check before the vehicle is called a 10 mm truck is cheaper than a rejection at the site. Management is refusing to dispatch a size the plant did not make.
What a buyer can ask
Ask which pile the stone will come from, and whether that pile is dedicated. Ask what happens to oversize. Ask whether GSB is a designed blend or a sweep of the yard.
Quarrytec’s rule on its own shifts is simple: screens split the sizes, oversize returns, and piles stay apart. A truck is named for the pile it actually loaded.
